                        Sonora 24 Canadian 14

With less than ten minutes left in the game and Sonora driving, trying to deliver the knock-out punch, Canadian’s defense provided a late game spark that made this regional playoff in Sweetwater one to remember. Sonora, leading 14-0 with touchdowns in both the first and second quarters, had the ball first and goal inside the Wildcat 5 yard line when Boston Hudson intercepted a Michael Rollert pass in the endzone and provide the spark, for the fireworks that followed.

Canadian, held scoreless through close to three and a half quarters went on a 90 yard drive in 11 plays and scored their first points of the game on a 25 yard touchdown pass from Ben Arbuckle to Chris Marquez with 7:45 left in the game. Marquez carried several Bronco defenders the last 7 yards with him into the endzone for a score that he was NOT going to be denied. The ensuing Wildcat kick went past the Sonora deep returners and pinned them back inside their own 10. On the first offensive play, Rollert carried for what looked to be a Bronco first down but the ball popped out and Gabe Martinez recovered at the Sonora 21. On the first Wildcat play after the turnover, Ben connected with Marcos Trevino for a classic tip drill 21 yard touchdown pass that knotted the game at 14 on Jessie Sandoval’s 25 yard second point after try and only 20 seconds of game clock after Canadian’s first score of the game.

Sonora would answer. The Broncos took the ensuing kick to midfield, setting up their final touchdown of the game on a quick 50 yard drive in 4 plays when Rollert kept it for a 4 yard score with 5:52 left and the margin in this one. They later would add a 22 yard field goal from Kade Wimberly with 2:07 left and a 10 point, 24-14 win for Sonora.

After a defensive struggle to start this one, Sonora struck first on a Damon Evans 8 yard run late in the first and also took the lead 14-0 at intermission on a 16 yard Rollert to Hagen Kennedy TD pass with just :36 seconds left in the first half.

Statistically, the Wildcats were led by Ben Arbuckle who threw for 258 yards. Marcos Trevino had 72 of those yards on 7 catches and Boston Hudson finished with 4. Sonora had a slight edge in total yards 316-301 but won the time of possession battle and capitalized on great field position through the ballgame. Sonora (10-3) will move on to the regional final to play Colorado City who defeated Abernathy. Canadian finishes an awesome year at 10-3.
